Gowns, Gowns & *guess what* More Gowns

Astro Girl is impossibly tired today.

She should be. It's only normal. As would anyone who tries on a grand total of 21 wedding gowns and 10 evening gowns within roughly three hours. Wah!! Yup, wah is the word. And yes, Astro Girl really did that!

While Astro Girl was happily trying on gowns of different designs, Eric Banana was sleeping away. Haha, just kidding! The latter was trying to make himself useful by providing feedback on each gown. Eric Banana is extremely critical when it comes to fashion design so Astro Girl was very tempted to rain a few punches on Eric Banana at some point in time today. In his defense, Eric Banana would like to opine that it's hard to find a "perfect" gown. Somehow, there will be at least one aspect that spoils the dress. If it's odd, it's odd. Full-stop. Who wants to wear something unflattering on her big day anyway?

Eventually, they shortlisted four wedding gowns and three evening gowns. Astro Girl decided on an off-white classic halterneck gown for the AD. For now, she's fine with having an off-the-rack (OTR) gown but Eric Banana thinks that she should go for a made-to-measure (MTM) one. As for the evening gown, she picked a turquoise/black halterneck-variant gown. So why the obsession with halternecks? Well, it was not a deliberate choice. Both gowns just turned out so well on Astro Girl. Eric Banana feels that the elegant timeless look suits her more than the princess-whatever look. Okay, this shall be it for the time being although Astro Girl reserves the right to change her mind whenever she wants. What, it's a girl's prerogative okay?
  • Actual Day Wedding Gown: Selected
  • Actual Day Evening Gown : Selected
  • Photoshoot Costume: Yet to be decided (maybe AstroBanana will pass on the costume part and Astro Girl will take one of the shortlisted wedding or evening gowns)
  • Photoshoot Outdoor Wedding Gown: Yet to be decided
  • Photoshoot Evening Gown: Yet to be decided
So what about Eric Banana? Well, his turn will come in June when Astro Girl goes for her second fitting and her trial make-up.

Lastly, AstroBanana would like to thank their MBR coordinator Abbie for all her patience and assistance today. She was very sweet and did not complain despite having to pull gowns from all over the place (and they are heavy!) and help Astro Girl change into them. She also did not theaten to kill or maim Eric Banana for making useless comments about the gowns. MBR's service has been exemplary so far. AstroBanana think that they have made the right choice.

Gowns Galore~!

After many months of inertia, AstroBanana are finally back on the wedding prep path. They are currently at My Bridal Room. Today, the focus is on Astro Girl's wedding gown and evening gown for the actual day. Let the selection begin!

Of Preambles

A true blue *quite literally* Singaporean love story, the AstroBanana Trilogy has received overwhelming responses (against zero expectation, everything is overwhelming) and mostly positive feedback (about the content, that is... not so much of the writing, dang!) since it was posted in July 2008. It even caught the attention of their virtual matchmaker, gomoviedate.com! AstroBanana would like to thank those who have wasted precious time to read their love story, especially those who made an effort to leave comments.

Eric Banana is happy to announce that he plans to write a "preamble" to Part III of the AstroBanana Trilogy. It will be an exclusive "behind-the-scenes" piece. Stay tuned!

AstroBanana Trilogy Part III

As trilogies go, everything that has a beginning has an end.

The time has come for E.B. Skywannabe to do what a Jedi Knight must do. And no, messing up sentence structures, it's not about. With a hint of reluctance, he powers up his lightsabre and leaps into the deep abyss...

Not the story you have been waiting for? Oops! What about this one...

It was early March 2008. Eric Banana and Astro Girl had been in a relationship for nearly a year. They were trying to decide where to go for dinner to celebrate their first anniversary (which falls on 23 March) together. Knowing that Astro Girl is not a big fan of fancy expensive restaurants, Eric Banana suggested going to Ma Maison, a restaurant which serves nice, reasonably-priced Japanese Western food, at The Central in Clarke Quay.

A week or so before the anniversary (read: 14 March 2008), Eric Banana was a troubled man. He could not get to sleep that night as he had suddenly come up with the grand idea of proposing to Astro Girl on their anniversary date. Actually, he did have a very good opportunity when they were in Hong Kong a few weeks ago. AstroBanana went up to Victoria Peak then and took a stroll to a secluded area with a breathtaking night view. But somehow Eric Banana did not pop the question at that time. What a waste! Anyway, after finetuning his proposal idea, he went to get what he needed the next day. He also called to place a reservation for a table at Ma Maison on 23 March 2008.

The day soon arrived. That afternoon, Eric Banana met Astro Girl to watch a Korean movie - Secret Sunshine (密阳) - at The Picturehouse. Technically, Eric Banana could have proposed in the cinema. It would be appropriate too; after all, AstroBanana did meet each other for the first time in a cinema. But Eric Banana resisted the temptation and decided to stick to his original plan.

After the movie, they made their way to The Central. Upon reaching Ma Maison, they were led to a table by the window with a nice view of the river. While Eric Banana did not inform the restaurant of his plan, things somehow worked out his way. AstroBanana's table was in a corner, segregated from the rest of the restaurant. There was only another table next to their table. The candlelit setting was cosy. It was the perfect spot for the proposal.

The moment he sat down, Eric Banana started to look for the right moment to pop the question. He decided to wait till they placed their orders first. Aware that Ma Maison serves the food pretty quickly, Eric Banana eventually opted to wait until they had finished eating as he did not want his proposal to be disrupted halfway. Service was excellent that evening by the way.

Throughout dinner, Eric Banana was pretty nervous. What if Astro Girl said no?! Well, there was always Plan B to fall back on. Eric Banana's Plan B was fairly simple: Clobber Astro Girl on the head with a club and drag her by the feet back to his cave. It was not going to be a pretty sight though.

When they were finally done with dinner, Eric Banana knew he had to slow down the pace a little. He would lose the opportunity to propose the moment they stepped out of the restaurant. Astro Girl said she did not want to have dessert (argh, why not?!) so Eric Banana started weaving his little web of deceit. He pretended to be very full from the dinner and needed to order a cup of hot tea to aid in digestion. Smart right?

Out of the blue (quite literally), Eric Banana whipped out a lil' blue box and passed it to Astro Girl. Wah, so outright one meh? Well, he told her that he got her a little something as an anniversary present. A curious Astro Girl opened the box and found a Tiffany sterling silver charm bracelet inside.

Anything from Tiffany usually makes a nice present. Astro Girl thanked Eric Banana for the present. He went on to mumble, "You know, some Tiffany charm bracelets have charms on them. Yours doesn't have..."

*short but dramatic pause*

"...which means you probably need this."

And out of nowhere, Eric Banana pulled out a second lil' blue box. Wah!

Astro Girl was surprised to see the second lil' blue box and had no idea what the impish Eric Banana was up to. When she opened the box, she found a Tiffany sterling silver charm with the words "Marry Me" etched on it. At the same time, Eric Banana asked Astro Girl the timeless question: "Dear, will you marry me?"

There were no flowers. There was no diamond ring. Eric Banana did not go down on one knee. But Astro Girl unexpectedly said yes. (Note: In fact, she thought it was a rather unconventional way of proposing.) Yay! It was the happiest moment in Eric Banana's life (*erm* at least until the next happiest moment arrives.) He added in a somewhat apologetic tone, "Sorry dear, I hope you don't mind but I could not afford a Tiffany ring. I wanted to get you something from Goldheart but you said you rated it in the same category as Taka Jewellery." (Context: They went out the day before and Astro Girl had made that very comment.)

Astro Girl said that she did not mind the fact that Eric Banana did not propose with a ring. As to how much she meant her words - only she knows. AstroBanana went on to talk about diamond rings. For Astro Girl, Taka Jewellery was obviously out. So were Citigems and SK Jewellery. Goldheart was not highly regarded by her either. Astro Girl was leaning towards Soo Kee's Brilliant Rose diamond collection and Lee Hwa's Destinee diamond collection. Eric Banana asked, "What about Tiffany?" (a leading question obviously) Astro Girl replied, "Nice but overpriced. Not worth spending so much money on." At that very moment, Eric Banana pulled out a third lil' blue box from nowhere and commented, "Hmmm, that means you are probably not going to like this..."

And inside the third box was a Lucida diamond ring from Tiffany. Astro Girl was elated to see the ring because Eric Banana had led her to believe that there was no ring. Guess Astro Girl was somewhat relieved that Eric Banana was not such a cheapskate after all. But her instincts soon kicked in and she felt 心疼 (read: heartache) that Eric Banana had spent so much money on a ring :|

Actually, Astro Girl had already considered the possibility of Eric Banana proposing on that day so it was not a total surprise. Astro Girl asked Eric Banana a really odd question after the proposal though: "Did you make some arrangement with the restaurant?" A puzzled Eric Banana said no. Astro Girl followed up with "Then why was the waitress so friendly to you the whole evening?" UH-OH. Eric Banana detected the tension in the air (jealousy?) and tried to defuse the situation by replying, "Oh. Really? I didn't notice. I was too preoccupied with getting the order of the boxes right. Where got time to notice anything else?" Phew.

That was how Eric Banana won Astro Girl's hand in marriage.

The end? Not yet...

... and they lived happily ever after.

The End.

Omega Finds Love!

Guess what Eric Banana just got to know via MSN Messenger! Omega has found love in the U.S. of A. and she's certain beyond a shadow of doubt that HE IS THE ONE! *screams* AstroBanana are very happy for her and look forward to hearing the whole story :)

After V Comes W - The Rule Of The Alphabet

As it turned out, AstroBanana made a wise move by meeting on W-Day (a.k.a. the day after V-Day) instead. Orchard Road was somehow less crowded. No doubt the guys who spent a fortune yesterday were nursing their "wounds" at home today. Hopefully, the money was well-spent and no hearts were broken. After all, many people do get dumped on V-Day. Eric Banana still cannot comprehend why guys and gals alike would choose to dump their other halves on V-day. He deems it as a cruel move as the emotional hurt is exponentially compounded. Anyway, some florists are laughing all the way to the banks and will close shop until the next V-day.

With Oscar season just around the corner, AstroBanana went to watch The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (TCCOBB), which garnered 13 nominations for the 2009 Academy Awards. Despite the movie being 165 minutes long, Eric Banana was transfixed by it. Helmed by David Flincher, who directed Se7en, Fight Club and Panic Room, TCCOBB is a poignant tale starring Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett and a stellar supporting cast. At the end of the movie, Eric Banana walked away with some thoughts:

Nothing lasts forever. All good things must come to an end. However, until that day comes, one has every right to live life to the fullest. Try something new. Take a fall. Break a routine. Reinvent oneself. Sometimes, one has to take a slight detour in order to find out what he is missing. And he may or may not return to the original path after that. It's all okay - life is imperfect anyway.

Also, just because happiness tends to be short-lived doesn't mean one should abandon happiness. All the more one should appreciate his loved ones - they won't always be there. It's easy to take things, people, for granted. And when they are gone, the regret sets in. Well, it's never too late to start treasuring what you have... who you have...

V For Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day 2009...

... was a non-event for AstroBanana. The lovely Astro Girl did not receive any roses. Or tulips for that matter. There was no candlelight dinner. Nor did they take a romantic walk in the park. (They did take a not-so-romantic walk in several parks yesterday though.) In fact, AstroBanana did not meet at all today. Whoa. So where is the love?

Well, the ever-thrifty Astro Girl ahbors the idea of spending money unnecessarily on V-Day indulgences and letting merchants profit from over-hyped commercialism. While he doesn't mind spending the money, Eric Banana has no interest in joining hordes of couples in having meaningless overpriced dinners at fancy restaurants. To him, every day is V-Day. He does not need to wait for that one special day each year just to be nice to Astro Girl. Actually, the real reason why AstroBanana did not even meet to dine at the foodcourt today was because Eric Banana was way too tired - after the high tea yesterday, he went on to have dinner and sing karaoke with Ee Huei and friends as it was the latter's birthday in two days' time. Eric Banana only got home slightly past 2 a.m. AstroBanana will meet tomorrow instead.

During an online conversation this afternoon...

Eric Banana (wanting to be sure): Dear ah, are you sure you don't want any flowers?

Astro Girl (in a neutral tone): Yah. I don't like to see flowers wither.

Eric Banana (excitedly): Oh, you want plastic flowers! I go and order now!

Astro Girl (rolling her eyeballs): ...

In case you forgot, they have already bought their V-Day present (yup, singular) one month ago.

High Tea @ Royal Copenhagen

After their Southern Ridges hike yesterday morning, AstroBanana managed to get some rest before meeting up with Danon for high tea. They ended up going to the Royal Copenhagen Tea Lounge & Restaurant, which is tucked away in a corner on Level 2 of the Takashimaya Department Store in Ngee Ann City.

Since AstroBanana's idea of high tea always revolves around Ya Kun or Toast Box, it should be pretty obvious by now that Danon was the one who suggested that they go to the Royal Copenhagen Tea Lounge & Restaurant. Then again, to be fair to him, he always has good recommendation for food places.

They each ordered a cup of Royal Copenhagen Coffee, which Eric Banana found to have a delightful taste without being overpoweringly strong. Danon ordered a Honey Date Pudding while AstroBanana had a cake each (she chose the Cranberry Almond while he went for the Carrot Cake).

There is this hot bun that the cafe only serves with its soups. Danon wanted to have it so badly that he managed to cajole the waitress into taking orders for the hot buns only. It was interesting to witness Danon working his magic. And yes, it involved some hand gestures too.

By the way, the hot buns were really nice. AstroBanana decided that they need to go back one day to try other items on the menu. High tea or dinner, anyone?

The Southern Ridges... Conquered!

As they stepped out from Harbourfront MRT station, AstroBanana began their trek with a brisk walk along Marang Trail (0.8 km) toward Mount Faber. To Eric Banana, it was more of a climb UP Marang Trail as the elevation is 70 metres, which is the equivalent of a 24-storey building. Oh sheesh, they forgot to do some warm-up exercises first!

As it was a weekday yesterday, there weren't too many people so it was a nice quiet walk. In addition, the hype surrounding the Southern Ridges has ebbed since its opening last year. At the end of Marang Trail is Faber Trail (1.0 km), which cuts through Mount Faber Park. The view was *erm* breathtaking. Did anyone check out the weather yesterday? It was as if the haze monster has sunk its teeth on whatever scenery bits there are left in Singapore.

The good thing about negotiating the elevation of Marang Trail first was that it allowed AstroBanana to take a largely downslope walk for the rest of their journey. The next stop was Henderson Waves (0.3 km), which is a pedestrian bridge (the highest in Singapore) - characterised by its wave-form architecture - connecting Mount Faber and Telok Blangah Hill.

After Henderson Waves was the Hilltop Walk (1.0 km), which runs through Telok Blangah Hill Park. Eric Banana took a short walk up to the Terrace Garden at the top of the park with Astro Girl. The last time he was there was probably 14 years ago. He remembered liking the place a lot then. However, that feeling kinda dissipated when he went there yesterday. It looks a bit run-down nowadays too.

AstroBanana's objective was to complete the Southern Ridges hike, so they did not stop much to appreciate the scenery. They promptly moved on to the Forest Walk (1.3 km), which is an elevated metal walkway through Telok Blangah Hill's secondary forest. There are also earth trails below the walkway.

There are also "short-cuts" in the form of staircases. This reminded Eric Banana of the game "Snakes and Ladders". The ladders part though. No snakes in sight yesterday.

AstroBanana next reached Alexandra Arch (0.08 km), a bridge shaped like an open leaf that spans across Alexandra Road.

On the other side of Alexandra Arch was the Floral Walk (0.3 km), which leads to HortPark (1.1 km), a gardening hub.

AstroBanana wished they had more time to stop and smell the flowers. However, as it was getting hot, they decided to move along quickly. They soon reached the Canopy Walk (0.3 km), an elevated wooden walkway linking Kent Ridge Park to Reflections at Bukit Chandu and HortPark.

Throughout most of the Southern Ridges, there are adequate directional signboards and markings. This was very helpful for AstroBanana because they did not bring a map along. However, after HortPark, AstroBanana found the directional signage lacking. This led them to take a wrong turn and they ended up walking up the same stretch twice :(

On the way towards Kent Ridge Park, Eric Banana saw a very disturbing signboard. Go figure out why.

AstroBanana finally reached Kent Ridge Park after 2.5 hours of walking. Yay!

They decided to make it their last stop as they were both quite tired and Astro Girl was still recovering from her flu. It took them some time to navigate out of Kent Ridge Park though as the directional signage there was utterly confusing. And that ended their Southern Ridges conquest.

Eric Banana was glad that they finally went for the hike. Some time ago, AstroBanana were planning to visit all the parks in Singapore but somehow did not manage to do it. They covered three major parks yesterday - Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park and Kent Ridge Park. While the skies were musky, the weather was still rather hot. Astro Girl was perspiring like nobody's business. She declared that she will no longer complain about going to the movies.

Eric Banana noticed that urbanisation has pervasively impacted the natural scenery as he could almost see buildings in the background everywhere throughout the Southern Ridges. What a pity! He also observed that there are no park rangers or emergency phone booths. If something bad happens, help may be not readily available for some time. Some of the trails and walkways seem treacherous if it rains, for example, the Forest Walk's metal walkway will probably be extremely slippery. One should never take safety for granted.

To Conquer The Southern Ridges

After a slight delay (what, only about six months or so?), AstroBanana decided to take a day's leave from work and *finally* take a walk along the Southern Ridges. This time, they could not use the weather as an excuse. Dang!

So, will AstroBanana conquer the Southern Ridges today? Or will they give up halfway? Of course, the line between conquering and being conquered is as thin as how this Blackberry Bold would be after being smashed by a hammer. If you have any doubts, you can try asking any army which had suffered a defeat in the annals of history. (Note: To post the question, you probably would have to make a trip to the Underworld - not to be confused with the Underwater World - first. It's a one-way trip, and no inflight meals will be provided. Entertainment is available at a small fee.)

Hmmm, no sight of the Astro in AstroBanana yet. Maybe an evening walk would be nice too :p

8 Months To Go!

9 February 2009.

There is something about this date but Eric Banana could not quite place his finger on it for most of the day. After some finger gymnastics, it (not the finger lar!) suddenly struck him...

Eight more months to go before AstroBanana get married!

*gasp* Time really flies, doesn't it? In fact, it seems as if there is a hyperdrive engine hidden somewhere. While they have already done a lot of things (at least, they would like to think so), it's about time AstroBanana get back into full-scale wedding preparation mode.

*panic*

As Boring As It Gets

Eric Banana was having an idyllic conversation with Astro Girl one fine day. As they talked about the future, he confidently assured her that she does not have to worry about married life being boring. Before Astro Girl could begin to picture how interesting their lives are going to be, The Smart One had to spoil the moment by saying, "For us, life is already very boring as it is now. It's hard to imagine how much more boring it can get. It's like redefining the lowest limit."

While Eric Banana definitely killed the romance of the moment, Astro Girl could not help but somewhat agree with what seemed to be a fair observation. Actually, AstroBanana do not seek too much excitement in life - they are just content to have each other's company and lead a peaceful, stable life.

*raises cue card to audience to coo "AWWW" in unison*

The Little Blue Box
